One Humungus Fungus, feral fairies and fireworks all have a home at Crystal Falls in August. This tiny little place in Michigan becomes a celebratory la la land in favor of a very, very big Fungus.
How big you ask? Well, the gigantic mushroom nick named the “Humungus Fungus” was discovered several years ago at Crystal falls weighing roughly 11 tons and covering a space of 37 acres. This makes it the largest mushroom (fungus) in the world, and based on the average rate of growth through the soil probably more than 1,500 years old. A nice incentive to cook up the biggest mushroom risotto to feed a few nations!
And the best thing to do when you find something big, is well, to have fun with it! Hence “The Humungus Fungus Fest” was born. For three days each August tourists and locals alike celebrate this giant fungus phenomenon with a spectacular celebration. There are a whole bunch of physical things to do such as a Buckboard and Horseshoe Tournament, Tube Float down the river or Volley Ball or Golf Tournament. If you prefer your festivals to increase you waistline then go to the Veterans of Foreign Wars’ Hall for a Pancake Breakfast whilst watching the Fungus Fest Parade and softball game, then gobble up ice cream at the Ice Cream Social followed by the Pie Social for home made pies. If you are still able to walk and could be bothered with some healthy stuff the Salad Luncheon at St. Mark’s Church offers tasty culinary selections. At the end of the day pull up a chair and recline with your gigantic belly and be wowed by the pretty fireworks.
