A few words on Lisbon, and the area surrounding the Duque Chiado apartment:

A settlement since c. 1200 BC, mythically founded by Ulysses, Lisbon is one of the oldest cities in the world. Rich in architecture, a sample of this diversity can be found in the area surrounding the Duque Chiado apartment. Within walking distance are Lisbon's Opera House, the Carmo Convent, the Chiado Museum, a number of churches, including the oldest church in Lisbon.

Also nearby is the Luís de Camões square, where you can: enjoy an espresso in the most famous of Chiado's cafés, the Brasileira; go next door to sample a chocolate croissant from the no less famous Benard pastry and coffee shop; try out a 'ginginha de Óbidos' or one of the many traditional Portuguese products available from the refreshments kiosk before heading upwards to the Bairro Alto district. Once there, you can take your pick: a meal in one of the many quality restaurants, drinks in the bars and clubs peppered around the cobbled streets, or a more traditional Portuguese night of dinner and fado in one of the several Fado houses.

There is a little something for every taste, and everything is within walking distance of the Duque Chiado apartment. In the afternoons, why not try a trip down the Escadas do Duque?

Step out the door and take a walk down the typical Lisbon stairways, where you can browse through the bookshops sporting a variety of publications - who knows, in the mist of the broad selection of second-hand books, you might find a valuable antique!

Just a few minutes walking will place you in the middle of the Baixa district, the commercial centre of the city. The Pombaline Baixa is an elegant district, primarily constructed after the 1755 Lisbon earthquake, taking its name from its benefactor, the 1st Marquis of Pombal, a key figure during the Portuguese Enlightenment. Built after the 1755 disaster, the Pombaline architectural structures are one of the first examples of earthquake-resistant construction and was placed on Portugal's list of potential World Heritage Sites.
