We have taken you to Berlin for a party, we have showed you the best of Frankfurt and we have enjoyed Hamburg without spending an euro ... and in the end it has happened, we are in love with Germany!

This time we fly to Leipzig, a city with a great musical tradition, famous for great artists like Bach, Wagner or Mendelssohn. Do you want to know what are waiting for you in this great city? So let's go!

HISTORICAL CENTER

The center of Leipzig only surpasses two square kilometers and is surrounded by trees, squares and parks. Like most medieval cities, its historical center consists on narrow streets, many of them pedestrians, and squares.

Here you can find the famous Grimmaische Straße, the main shopping street, which connects the area of Augustplatz with Markt, the town hall square.

THOMASKIRCHE

Near the town hall, we find Thomaskirche, or what is the same, the cathedral of Leipzing, called church of St. Thomas. It has very high ceilings gable and a characteristic white bell tower. In it is buried Johann Sebastian Bach.

In fact, you can admire a sculpture of him next to the building.

AUGUSTPLATZ

On the south-east side of the historic center, we have Augustplatz. An important point that houses attractive places such as the University of Leipzig, the Egyptian Museum or the Leipzig’s Opera. Although the main attraction of the area is undoubtedly the Panoramic Tower or City-Hochhaus Leipzig, designed as an annex of the university and currently used as offices.

The interesting thing about the tower is that it measures 142 meters, being the highest tower in the city, and you can climb up to its panoramic viewpoint and admire the incredible views.

THE BATTLE OF THE NATIONS

Looking like an Asian pagoda, among the trees rises the Völkerschlachtdenkmal, sometimes also affectionately called Völki. It is a monument to the Battle of Leipzig, built in 1813. It was built 100 years later, to commemorate the centenary of the Prussian victory in the battle between Russia, Prussia, Austria and Sweden and the Napoleon's army.

The monument has 91metros of height, and was constructed in concrete, although its exterior is of brown granite.

MARKT

The Markt is nothing more than the Plaza Mayor, in which you can see the old town hall and some of the historic buildings of the city. Another attraction of this square is the Alte Börse or the old stock exchange of Leipzig, a tiny building in rococo style and whose entrance you can see the statue of the writer and poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.

In summer, both the square and the surrounding streets are filled with people who drink something on their numerous terraces.
