Situated south of the equator in Tanzania, at 5,895 metres, is Africa's highest mountain and the highest "free standing" mountain in the world. Huge permanent glaciers flow down from the summit, and the sheer presence of this huge mountain dominates the entire area. An icon in Africa, "Kili " as the mountain is affectionately known, is one of the sights every person should see at least once in their life. Feeling energetic, then try your hand or I should say legs at the Offical Kilimanjaro Marathon. Dates for this event change year by year, the next race will be held on 27th Feb 2005. This race was set up mainly to promote sport in Tanzania, yet it has also become a way to help the people of the area receive funds from the tourism industury.

About the Race

The route starts and ends in Moshi, Tanzania, and runs north towards the mountain, through rural farmland on a tarmac road, before returning on another rural dirt road to end back in Moshi. The total altitude gain is not great, and it is a standard 42.2 km marathon and a 21.1 km half marathon. The route passes through many small holder farms, villages, banana and coffee plantations and patches of forest, providing great excitement to the residents and many vocal supporters. The race is completely backed by many local organisations and official timekeeping is arranged, as is an official prize giving and function attended by local dignitaries.

There are a choice of three different races open to runners and guests; the Celtel 5km fun run route, the 21.1km Kilimanjaro half marathon route or the full 42.2km Kilimanjaro marathon route.

Community Involvement

Currently projects in the rural Moshi area are being looked at to develop with funds raised from this project, such as schools and clinics which the community needs and is backed by local community leaders. The local hospital in Moshi has been selected for this years race, in particular the maternity ward. There is a great shortage of school places in the Moshi Region, especially in senior school. It can be quite difficult to get hold of supplies for the schools, therefore it is suggested any guest or participent of the race bring along a small gift new or used such as books, pens or stationary, etc.
