In the Colombian department of Atlántico you will find, rising 15 metres from the ground like an oversized anthill, El Totumo, one of the best examples of a mud volcano and certainly one of the messiest. From 1 December - 31 March is the time to make like a pig and wallow in mud glorious mud.

A mud volcano is created by natural gasses emitted by decaying organic matter underground. As the mud is pushed upwards by the gas it deposits and hardens above ground. As more mud oozes out and spills over the edge it grows in size, gradually forming what you can see today - a miniature volcano with a rich, creamy mud crater at the top.

If you're the cleaner type maybe the idea of jumping into a pool of wet dirt is not really appealing, but just wait till you feel the warm smooth texture whilst receiving a massage from an experienced local and you will soon be drifting off into a pig sty heaven. And don't worry, it all washes off.

As an added bonus the natural properties of the mud are indisputably good for the skin. After a few layers have been rubbed off your body, you'll glow pink and golden under the Carribean sun!
