The Old Countryhouse

The two owers of The Old Countryhouse, Gerti and Andy decided to settle down in Christchurch 18 years ago to offer their fellow travellers the hostel they thought New Zealand was missing: a comfortable and homely place to stay with friendly staff members and relaxed atmosphere!

The Old Countryhouse Backpackers can host up to 78 people in three different villas. We offer bigger and smaller dorms all equipped with bunk beds, which are larger and more stable than your average hostel bunk! There are also different types of private rooms, from single room to family rooms, some with Ensuite as well.
All beds come with linen included.

You will find at our hostel all the basic facilities... And so much more! Come and relax in our Spa and Sauna Sanctuary or meander down our sunny garden paths full of native plants. The Old Countryhouse is a bit like a retreat in the middle of the city, for people to relax after a big day of hiking and get ready for the next adventure! We offer free unlimited WiFi, three fully equipped kitchens, there's also a BBQ area.

A little out of the city centre and in a quieter neighbourhood, the Old Countryhouse still has all the necessary facilities at walking distance. Just across the street, you will find a small supermarket, a few take-away restaurants, the post office and some ATM's. We are also at a short walking distance of our favourite pubs and cafes, and a few restaurants as well. Getting to the city centre is a 1500m walk with many main attractions on the way.

The Old Countryhouse has charmed many travellers throughout the years; Some say it's the spa and sauna sanctuary, some say it's the sunny gardens, some say it's our well-equipped kitchens, some just love getting the dog love from Max and some say it's the homely atmosphere. Everybody has their own reason to come back,and to make themselves at home here at The Old Countryhouse.
