Directions

If you are coming on foot, you can reach the Hostel through the streets linking the upper and lower parts of town (the Alta and the Baixa). These are quite steep, as visitors have to go on an uphill walk. Through Quebra-Costas or from the University you can follow the signs of the Old Cathedral.

Traffic in Coimbra can flow relatively smoothly, but parking in the centre is limited. In the University area parking is practically impossible during the day. If you are coming by car and for a short stay, it’s advisable to use one of the many underground car-parks in the city centre. For a longer stay, use one of the free riverside car-parks, such as the one on the Santa Clara side of the river. First you can leave your luggage in the hostel.

If you want to get to Coimbra from Lisbon by car (200km), you should take the highway A1 in the direction of Porto and exit in Coimbra Sul (toll charges about €13). The travel takes approximately 2 hours. If you came from Porto by car (120 km), you should take the same highway A1 in direction of Lisbon and exit in Coimbra North (toll charges about €7). The travel takes approximately 1 hour.

If your are coming from train, there are two railway stations in Coimbra: Coimbra A – Estação Nova, “The New Station” and Coimbra-B – Estação Velha, “The Old Station.” All trains stop at Coimbra B. Once there, you should take a shuttle to Coimbra A (your train ticket already includes this short trip). From Coimbra – A you can either walk (10-15 min) or get a taxi to get to the hostel.

Coimbra’s taxis are available by telephone or from taxi-ranks. There is a fixed initial charge, plus a fee depending on the length of the journey, shown on the taximeter.
