The best means of travelling around Italy is by train. Planes can be quite expensive, and unless you're travelling from the North to the South they don't save you so much time.

The Italian public train system (the company is called Trenitalia) has been improving a lot in the last decade, and while still much cheaper than, say, German and British trains, it is quite efficient and functional.

You really need to travel by car only if you plan to stop in several minor cities that are outside of the train itineraries. Beside, traffic is quite hectic and parking a kind of nightmare in almost every city in Italy.
